He was 3-under par on the inward nine to rally past Jim Furyk. McIlroy was one day short of a full calendar year without a victory. Furyk, 48, shot a final-round 67 and was the leader in the clubhouse until McIlroy charged. He last won in 2015 but put an exciting jolt into the proceedings. McIlroy was neither artistic nor superlative from start to finish, and Ron Green Jr. captures his performance as one “in work boots and jeans, doing what had to be done.” The great ones win even when they are not at their best. That leaves Jordan Spieth on the outside looking in at “great” status. The three-time major winner missed the cut, continuing a string of erratic performances with rounds of 76 and 69. Spieth was not the only frustrated one in Florida. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan vented a bit about rules rumblings – and seemed to feel better for having gotten it out, writes John Hopkins.
