Long-hitting Champ in the mix for second straight win

At this point, it’s pretty clear that Cameron Champ’s game can travel.

Mere days after notching his first career PGA Tour victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Champ swapped the cozy confines of Jackson Country Club for the arid setup at TPC Summerlin. But the results haven’t regressed much, as Champ moved into the mix at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open with a 6-under 65.

At 8 under for the week, he was tied for eighth and five shots behind Peter Uihlein when darkness suspended second-round play. Just a few weeks after he was first handed a Tour card, the 23-year-old now has a chance for two wins in as many weeks.

“Kind of just been struggling with the swing a little bit, just getting a little quick,” Champ told reporters. “But coming down the back side, just kind of slowed down a little bit. Made a very lucky birdie on 12 that kind of got me going on that five-hole stretch.”

The stretch in question included five birdies in five holes, as Champ moved from the cut line to the cusp of the leaderboard while making just one putt over 9 feet.

“I was just hitting quality shots, just giving myself chances,” Champ said.
